Week of April 22 - 26, 2024
 
Reading:
Students will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension by reading daily in small reading groups and independent reading at school and at home. Students will continue reading class novel, "Sign of the Beaver."  Students will also review persuasive elements and read persuasive texts.  
 
Language Arts:
Students will continue writing persuasive essays this week and utilize the Writing Process steps in doing so.
 
Spelling:
No spelling!
 
Handwriting:
Review all letters in cursive and practice writing them individually and as they connect to other letters.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Week of April 15 - 19, 2024
 
Reading:
Students will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension by reading daily in small reading groups and independent reading at school and at home. Students will continue reading class novel, "Sign of the Beaver."  Students will also review persuasive elements and read persuasive texts.  Students will also continue to practice STAAR Reading Released Tests, applying all learned reading strategies.
 
STAAR PARADE!  Monday, April 15th, 2:45 p.m.
 
STAAR READING/LANGUAGE ARTS ASSESSMENT - Tuesday, April 16th.
 
 
Language Arts:
Students will also practice revising and editing using STAAR Released tests to apply all learned grammar, punctuation, and revision skills.  Students will answer short and extended constructed response answers for the writing portion of the STAAR.
 
Spelling:

Week of March 4 - 7, 2024
 
Reading:
Students will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension by reading daily in small reading groups and independent reading at school and at home. Students will review the elements of informational texts and read and analyze passages utilizing all reading strategies to analyze and answer questions pertaining to the passages.  Students will also complete a STAAR Interim Reading Assessment on Wednesday, March 6th.
 
Language Arts:
Students will also study the hard and fast rules of proper capitalization, comma usage, and apostrophe usage, plurals, and numbers in various texts and writing.  We will practice revising and editing for our STAAR Interim Assessment on Wednesday. 
 
Spelling:
There is no spelling this week in lieu of our STAAR Benchmark Testing.

Reading:
Students will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension by reading daily in small reading groups and independent reading at school and at home. Students will review the elements of informational texts and read and analyze passages utilizing all reading strategies to analyze and answer questions pertaining to the passages.  Students will also complete a STAAR practice test online utilizing all reading strategies for all genres.
 
Language Arts:
Students will also study the hard and fast rules of proper capitalization, comma usage, and apostrophe usage, plurals, and numbers in various texts and writing.  
 
Spelling:
Unit 22:  Compound Words.  Please refer to Weekly Spelling Words and Guidelines for Fifth Grade.

Week of February 20 - 23, 2024
 
Reading:
Students will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension by reading daily in small reading groups and independent reading at school and at home. Students will review the elements of informational texts and read and analyze passages utilizing all reading strategies to analyze and answer questions pertaining to the passages.
 
Language Arts:
Students will publish their "I Have a Dream" essays and post them in the hallway.  Students will also study the hard and fast rules of capitalization, commas, and apostrophes usage in various texts and writing.  
 
Spelling:
Unit 21:  Words with Suffixes - en, -ist

Week of February 5 - 9, 2024
 
Reading:
Students will participate in a STAAR Field Test in Reading/Language Arts on Monday, February 5th.  Students will review the elements of informational texts and read and analyze passages utilizing all reading strategies to analyze and answer questions pertaining to the passages.
 
Language Arts:
Students will write an essay this week following The Writing Process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing their pieces.  They will listen to Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and brainstorm about what dreams they have about the future.  
 
Spelling:
You will be happy to know that during the weeks with STAAR practice tests or assessments, we do not have spelling work nor spelling tests! 😊
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Week of December 11 - 15, 2023
 
This week, we are reviewing fiction elements and analyzing plots in fiction traditional literature stories.  
 
We will have Spelling this week, Unit 15.  For those on the UIL Spelling Team, who will be studying Weeks 8 - 9, will need to write 30 of their words each evening of the week to prepare for their spelling test on Friday. 
 
Students are expected to read their 30 minutes each evening to continue building their fluency and comprehension by reading for sustained periods of time.  They are working on reading goals in A/R, and they receive certificates and prizes every three weeks for their progress, so they need to continue reading each evening all school year.  Thank you for your support!
